Every kid deserves a chance to make something real

We're committed to empowering the next generation of creators, engineers, and problem-solvers — in Hilliard's schools, community centers, and makerspaces.

The Belief

Why we put community at the center of everything

When we were building Layer One, we could have designed a straightforward retail business — sell product, take print orders, run some classes, go home. That would have been enough.

But we kept coming back to something bigger. Hilliard City Schools is one of the finest school districts in Ohio. The families here are engaged and invested. The kids are bright and curious. And yet, for most of them, 3D printing is still something they've seen on YouTube — not something they've actually done.

That felt wrong. And it felt like exactly the kind of wrong that a business like ours could help fix.

So from the very beginning, we built our community commitment into the foundation of Layer One — not as a marketing strategy, not as an afterthought, but as a genuine core purpose. We believe that empowering young people with creative and technical skills is one of the most valuable things we can do for this community. And we intend to do a lot of it.

  • We offer preferred vendor pricing and supply agreements for school makerspaces, STEM labs, and district programs — so teachers spend less time sourcing materials and more time teaching.

  • If your school has printers gathering dust because something's wrong and no one knows how to fix it, we can help. We offer maintenance and support packages designed for school environments — including on-site service.

  • Our workshops are designed to complement what students are already learning. Whether it's geometry, engineering, biology, or art, there's a 3D printing application that fits — and we'll build the session around your students' needs and grade level.

  • We offer training for teachers who want to bring 3D printing into their own classrooms — so the impact doesn't stop when our workshop does.

Partnerships

We're actively building relationships with Hilliard City Schools and the broader local education community to bring meaningful 3D printing programming to students at every level.

The Impact

What we want to see happen

We want to see a Hilliard kid who has never considered engineering walk out of a STEM camp thinking maybe they could do this.

We want to see a middle school teacher who always wanted to use 3D printing in their classroom finally feel confident enough to try it, with us as a resource they can call when something goes wrong.

We want to see a high school student who designed and printed something for a science fair project — and then looked up careers in industrial design, manufacturing, or engineering for the first time.

We want to see a school library with a printer that actually works, stocked with filament we supplied, used by kids every day after school.

That's what success looks like to us. Not just a store that's doing well — a community that's making more things, learning more deeply, and believing more fully in what its young people can do.

For Families

Not connected to a school? You're still welcome here.

Our community commitment isn't limited to schools and organizations. If you're a parent who wants their kid to experience 3D printing, a homeschool family looking for STEM enrichment, or a young person who just wants to learn — our classes and camps are open to everyone.

We believe the best communities are the ones where everyone has access to the same opportunities, regardless of where they go to school or what resources they have at home. We price our programs to be accessible, and we're always open to conversations about scholarships or reduced-cost spots when need is demonstrated.

Nobody gets left out. That's the whole point.

Get Involved

Are you an educator or community leader?

We'd love to talk. Whether you're a teacher who wants to bring a workshop to your classroom, a school administrator exploring a supply partnership, a library director thinking about a makerspace, or a community organization looking for programming ideas — we're open to the conversation and committed to finding something that works within your constraints.

Our school and community programs are designed to be flexible, affordable, and genuinely useful. We're not here to sell you something you don't need. We're here to be a real partner.
