Making things shouldn't be complicated

Our mission is to make 3D printing accessible, educational, and transformative for everyone — from the student printing their first prototype to the small business bringing a new idea to life.

What we're here to do
A woman working on a desktop computer with a laptop open in front of her in a craft room. The room has a large window, a whiteboard with colorful crafting supplies, and shelves with books and crafting materials. There is a 3D printer on the table and decorative butterfly ornaments hanging from the ceiling.

3D printing is one of the most powerful creative technologies ever put in the hands of everyday people. It can turn a sketch into a physical object, a broken part into a replacement, a classroom lesson into something a student actually holds and keeps.

But for most people, getting started still feels out of reach — too technical, too expensive, too easy to get wrong without help. That gap between what this technology can do and what most people actually have access to is exactly where we operate.

Layer One exists to close that gap. We do it through a retail shop staffed by people who actually know what they're talking about, through classes that meet people at every skill level, through a print service that turns your ideas into real objects, and through partnerships with schools and organizations that need a knowledgeable, reliable local partner.

We're not here to sell you the most expensive printer on the shelf. We're here to help you make the thing you actually want to make.

The Three Pillars

How we live our mission every day

  • 3D printing should be for everyone — not just engineers, not just tech enthusiasts, not just people who can afford to figure it out by trial and error. We stock products across every price range, teach classes designed for complete beginners, and never make anyone feel like they asked a dumb question. If you're curious, you belong here.

  • Knowing how to use a tool is just as important as having one. That's why education is built into everything we do — from the conversations at the counter to our structured class curriculum to the workshops we run in local schools. We want every person who walks through our door to leave knowing something they didn't know before.

  • The moment someone holds a finished print — something that didn't exist an hour ago and now does because of their idea — something shifts. That's not just a product. That's confidence. That's possibility. That's what we're really selling, and it's what keeps us showing up every day.

Why this matters now

The 3D printing market is in the middle of a generational shift. Printers that would have cost thousands of dollars just a few years ago now cost a few hundred. The quality has caught up. The software has gotten easier. The community has exploded.

But local resources haven't kept pace. Most communities — including Hilliard — still don't have a dedicated place to go for hands-on guidance, expert support, and real education. That's the opportunity we're stepping into, and it's one we take seriously.

Hilliard is growing fast. Its schools are among the best in Ohio. Its families are invested in their kids' futures. Its makers and entrepreneurs are building real things. We believe a community like this deserves a resource like Layer One — and we're committed to being worthy of that trust.

Looking Forward

Opening our Hilliard location is just the beginning. As we grow, we intend to expand our class offerings, deepen our school partnerships, and develop online courses that extend our reach beyond the Hilliard area.

We also have our sights set on something bigger: becoming a model for what a community-centered 3D printing resource can look like — in Hilliard first, and eventually elsewhere.

But right now, today, the mission is simple. Open the doors. Serve the community. Help people make things. One layer at a time.
